The government has, since the island's independence in 1965, pursued a number of policies to establish the multi-cultural population. . The intention is to facilitate cross-cultural communication .The Singapore goverment recognises four official languages: English, Malay,Mandarin , and Tamil .It strongly promotes bilingualism with English as the common language. However, there is still minority group of people who could not understand english eg. some elderly and foreigners . Therefore bilingualism is important to ensure that there is no disadvantages to the minority group.
